and Its Creator

"While lost in the Wilds of Afghanistan, someone dropped the corkscrew and we were forced
to live on food and water for several days."
-Statement attributed to W.C. Fields

What's the Wilds of Canada? And who's John Cadiz, its creator?
John Cadiz (above) always thought that W.C.Fields' humorous reference to Afghanistan as a wilds, faraway place seemed to fit common stereotypes of Canada. No surprise, then. That when he imagined a greeting card line featuring rowdy raccoons, lumberjack beavers, and dazed tourists chin-deep in snow, the name Wilds of Canada sprang naturally to mind.
John came to Canada from Trinidad in 1977. Though trained as a graphic designer, cartooning was always his first love. During a lull in design work in 1988, W. C. Fields' statement kept buzzing in John's head and he began to count moose on sleepless nights.
The Wilds of Canada was born.
